About the medieval meal and table manners
he servants of the Tafelrunde will welcome you as "Mannsbilder" and "Weibsbilder". It was unusual to drink alone in silence, but the tradtion was to call out a toast namend "to the Health!". As you know, eating and drinking are essential, therefore all other participants joined without questioning.
t our tavern you eat with your ten fingers or a dagger - and even the soup has to be slurped.
tealing the dagger or anything else from the table was forbidden and one could get in trouble with the servants. The bread was the divided with the proper hands and shared with the all other people that sat next to oneself.
s a sign of kindness a rest of food was left behind for the poor. Bread alone did not count, though.
he food or bones were not thrown across the room. There were hard times, too in the Middle Ages. Poor harvest, war and high taxes showed to the citizens what the meaning of hunger and misery was, ergo:
"Eat this meal with us, and enjoy it to the last."
